WNC Nature Center’s
Butterfly Tagging Expedition
September 22 – October 3, 2008
From 2:00 – 7:00pm
Welcome to the Butterfly Tagging Exploration held at the WNC Nature Center. Our hope is to provide you with a hands-on experience in animal management techniques, wildlife handling, and an understanding of our mountain ecosystems. We are proud to be able to facilitate this five hour program, both an indoor and outdoor education on butterfly ecology, biology, and research.
It is impossible to tell when the peak Monarch migration period will occur each year, so we have set the two week period, September 22 through October 3, as our dates for our investigation. Your name will be on our list for “On Call” – once the peak migration is in full swing, we will call you to see if you can attend. We will try to give our guests at least 24 hours notice.
We will begin our trip with a lecture on butterflies and then head to an offsite location to collect and tag Monarch butterflies. Our team will learn sexing methodology of Monarchs and proper tagging procedures. Information on each butterfly tagged will be documented and turned into the Monarch Watch organization, a national tagging and research center.
Please bring with you the following items:
Comfortable close-toed shoes (sneakers)
Light jacket
Water bottle and snacks
Camera
Binoculars
Sunscreen and hat
Butterfly net if you have one (if you have a favorite!)
We will meet at the Nature Center in the classroom and begin sharply at 2:00pm. We will be traveling in two 15-passenger vans to our research site (bring child seats if you have children requiring that need). Reservations are confirmed by full payment with a Visa or MasterCard ($15.00 per ticket, $12.00/members). Make your reservations at 828-298-5600, ext 305.
Call Eli Strull should you have any questions or concerns; (828)298-5600, ext 306. All participants are expected to use respectful manners and be courteous in this shared event. We look forward to an exciting day of butterflies, research, and friendships!
Sincerely,
Eli Strull
