Great Crested Flycatcher

Great Crested Flycatcher

The Great Crested Flycatcher spends most of its time hanging out in the treetops while here in the Southern Appalachians.  So it is more likely to be heard than seen.  It lives and breeds here in the summer, then migrates to Central America in the winter.

food
nesting
This Flycatcher eats insects and small fruits.  It catches insects in flight and on the ground. The Flycatcher likes to give its nest a “crackle” – snakeskins,  plastic and onion skins have been found woven into nests.  The bird utilizes other interesting items such as hair, feathers, fine roots, paper.  It fills the bottom of the cavity with trash and builds   the nest on top.  The female lays four to six eggs.
